Since last year, Ecommerce in the Philippines has been
slowly improving. Filipinos are now getting accustomed to shop at online stores
rather than the traditional offline malls. It was actually a challenge prior to
last year for the invasion of online stores in South East Asia. The most
notable venture that was launched last year was Lazada and Zalora, both of
which are under the Rocket Internet umbrella. South East Asia is actually a
perfect region to tap in online since the competition is still thin. A lot of
the reasons why it has no competition are due to the fact that not everyone is
ready for Ecommerce to begin with. For Philippines’ case, most of us are
limited in fulfilling conventional online payments. Only minority of the
population are credit card owners or Paypal users. For the minority population
who do have these resources for online, they are not settled in doing online
shopping. It entails a lot of risks on their part after all.
Everyone is very aware of the online scams and frauds that
are lurking all over the Internet landscape. We are known for being cautious,
so knowing these possibilities doesn’t help convince us to opt for online
instead of going to our traditional malls to go get what we want to buy. Good
thing that when Lazada arrived in the country, they offered a game changing
alternative payment method on their store. This payment method alone single
handedly eliminates the current online shopping woes that plagued Ecommerce for
so long. They called it “C.O.D.” which stands for Cash on Delivery. It’s
actually a payment method widely used in the country already. But they were the
first online store to offer such payment method. Conventional setup between
online store and customers is that customers need to pay via credit card or
Paypal. On top of that, online stores require the ordered items to be paid
upfront first before they ship it out from their warehouse into customer’s
address. With Lazada
Online Mall, it’s a different case. Customers can order anything from their
website and don’t pay right away.
All they need to do is leave their name and preferred
shipment address. The “Philippines’ Online Shopping Mall” will ship it out and
deliver at your address. Customers can pay in cash only after they receive
their orders in real time. This setup actually eliminates the doubts of the
customers about their credibility since no commitment is being required from the
customers. They get to keep their money up until they receive their orders,
which sound fair. Honestly, in my point of view this setup gives the online
store the disadvantage. Besides this awesome payment method, they even offer to
waive the shipment fee as long as you exceed the one thousand pesos transaction
value. I think this made the difference in the Ecommerce industry. By giving
Filipinos these options, it made everyone potential customers in an instant. As
compared to if they only offered conventional online payments, only a fraction
of the population would have even consider trying their online store.
